2006 F1 Japan (Suzuka)
Well, once again I found myself serving as the "useless assistant" to Jacques Deschenaux (Swiss TV commentator & author of the Grand Prix Guide). This year's Japanese F1 Grand Prix was a special one ... the Drivers Championship was being contested tightly between Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso with just two races to go ... and, it was going to be Michael Schumacher's farewell to Japan. The race was also special as it was going to be the last to be held at Suzuka (at least for now!). To the displeasure of all involved in F1, as of 2007, the Japanese GP is set to move to the Fuji Speedway ... but there is already talk that given the popularity of the Suzuka Circuit, it will be back in the near future!
Victory for Fernando Alonso and the stunning retirement for Michael Schumacher on lap 37 meant that just a single point at the season finale in Brazil would make Alonso champion for a second time. Amazingly, it was Michael's first non-crash retirement since Spain 2005, and this one really hurt.
As a side note ... With all that is big, loud and powerful about Formula 1, you have to look much closer to really understand the beauty and the incredible detail used in the design of these amazing machines ... or more precisely, these magnificent pieces of art ... that are produced year in, year out, by some of the most talented designers in the auto racing world.
