2007 F1 Japan
The politics of Japanese car makers landed the 2007 Japanese F1 GP at the Fuji Speedway, home of Toyota, after a 31 year absence. I guess investing over $400 million per season in their Formula 1 team does give them some leverage with Bernie Ecclestone! The one thing Toyota was not able to buy was good weather at the stunning Fuji Mountain in October.
Even though everyone expected a boring race given the track layout, with a 1.5km main straight, and terrible weather conditions, it turned into a very exciting and technical race.
With the race starting behind the Safety Car for the first 19 laps, Lewis Hamilton put in a performance worthy of a ten-year veteran, triumphing in pouring rain to score a magnificent - and vital - victory, while a crash ended Fernando Alonso’s race and dropped him 12 points behind in the title race. But will Hamilton’s magnificent fourth career victory be enough to clinch the drivers’ championship in his rookie year - with just 2 races to go? Say what you like about McLaren , but after this weekend's drive, there’s no question Hamilton deserved the win.
