TAG Heuer: Monaco GP 1999 – Limited Edition
Sometimes, you just have to get lucky to end up with an unusual "Limited Edition" timepiece. This is by far one of the most rare Tag Heuer watches ever made … at a Limited Edition of only 120 ! It was never sold to the public ! First 100 ‘given as gift’ to select few … and numbers 111-120 given to Ron Dennis, McLaren F1 team CEO, for him to give out ... to those who he deemed worthy !!
As you can imagine, it is one of my favorite pieces in my collection... and yes, I wear it all the time !!
The “Monaco” series became an “iconic” piece ever since Steve McQueen insisted on wearing the original blue dial version (1133) during the filming of “Le Mans” in 1971. It must be noted that he borrowed his racing suite from the Swiss driver Jo Siffert, who was a spokesperson for TAG at the time!
The Monaco was revolutionary for being the first automatic as well as the first “square cased” chronograph. The original series were discontinued in the mid-1970′s and only re-launched in 1998 … just before this limited series was distributed on-site at the 1999 Monaco GP.
So … by chance, I was in Nice in the summer of 1999, visiting two of my best friends, and by chance it was the weekend of the Monaco GP … and voila, I ended up with #97 … of the brilliant Calibre CS2111 series!
Who needs “bling” … when you can capture so much class with “simplicity” and “detail”.
